What's usually in the pile

A deck or a shed got built and there's a stack of cutoffs and warped 2x4s by the side of the house. A fence came down and forty pickets with the rails still nailed on are leaning against the garage. Jeremy takes the whole pile. Scrap lumber with the nails in, plywood scraps, deck boards, leftover trim, broken pallets and tree rounds that are already cut. Long boards lie flat on the trailer floor and the wooden sides keep loose pickets in on the freeway. Stack it where he can back the trailer up close.

Where the pile sits changes the job

Jeremy loads alone, so where the wood is sitting matters as much as how much there is. On an older Sugar House or Millcreek lot, the pile is usually behind the house and the only way in is a shared driveway or a gate that's narrower than a pallet. He carries it out to the trailer at the curb. If the boards can be stacked out front or on the driveway first, the load is quicker and the price comes down, but if they can't, he'll go back and get them. In the newer subdivisions in Sandy and Draper, the fence is the job more often than not, and if there's an HOA, tell him about any gate code or rule about what can sit on the driveway. Behind a shop on the west side, he backs the trailer down the alley and loads from there if it's wide enough.

Pallet runs for shops

Pallets pile up faster than anyone plans for. A shop in West Valley City gets a delivery every week and the broken ones go out back until the stack is blocking the dumpster. Where the wood goes

A stack of full-length boards that's still straight and clean gets offered to a donation center first, same as anything else Jeremy hauls that someone could use. Most of the time that's not what's in the pile. Scrap lumber with nails in it and gray fence boards are landfill wood, and that's where they go. Broken pallets too. Treated wood and painted wood are fine to haul. They ride to the landfill as well. If there's metal in the pile, old fence hardware or the brackets off a pallet rack, that comes out and gets recycled.

How Jeremy prices a wood pile

Text a photo of the wood to (801) 557-1063 and Jeremy prices it from that. A wide shot of the whole pile works better than a close-up of one board. He's looking at how much trailer it fills and how far he has to carry it. The leftovers from one weekend project usually sit right at the minimum. A full fence tear-out or a shop's pallet backlog runs higher, and he'll tell you the number before he drives over. What stays behind

A few things don't go on the trailer, and it's better to know before he pulls up. Hot tubs are out, even the ones with a cedar skirt around them. Rock, gravel, bricks and dirt are out too, so if the fence tear-out left a pile of dirt from the post holes, that part stays on the ground. Anything that needs a shovel is a different kind of job. A few chunks of broken concrete, like a couple of old post footings, can sometimes go with the wood, but a whole patio can't. Half-used cans of stain or deck sealer don't ride along either.
