West Valley City is Utah's second-largest city and a short run from Jeremy's base. The east side, Chesterfield, Redwood, and East Granger, is mostly 1960s and '70s brick ranch homes with the garages and basements that fifty years of family life fills up. The west side, out past Hunter toward the Oquirrh foothills, is newer subdivisions, with the packaging and furniture swaps that come with newer houses.

As of September 2026, the city's bulky-waste pickup is monthly, but everything has to be bagged, boxed, or bundled and under 75 pounds, with boxes no bigger than 30 gallons and bundles no longer than 5 feet. The pickup won't take construction and demolition waste, bricks, concrete, dirt, or rock, and appliances with freon need a professional tag. As of September 2026, there's also a once-a-year neighborhood dumpster program: requests open the first business day of February for placement between mid-March and early November, residential only, and the dumpsters get picked up two days after they land.

How West Valley City's Bulky Waste Service works

• Bulky waste is picked up at the curb once a month. Each address has its own collection schedule.
• Set items neatly near the curb no more than one day before your scheduled pickup day.
• Items must be out by 7 AM on pickup day.
• Keep items at least 5 feet from your waste containers and any other obstacle.
• Everything must be bagged, boxed, or bundled. Boxes 30 gallons or smaller, bundles no longer than 5 feet.
• Each bag, box, or bundle must weigh under 75 pounds, and boxes must be kept dry.
• Old appliances, furniture (couches and mattresses included), and carpet cut to under 5 feet and 75 pounds can go out for bulky pickup.
• Appliances with freon are only taken with a tag from an authorized private company showing the freon was removed.
• Limbs 3 inches across or smaller must be bundled and weigh under 75 pounds.
• Grass clippings are not picked up with bulky waste. They go in the garbage can.
• Anything with gasoline, oil, or other fuel must be drained first or it stays at the curb.
• Items containing glass are not picked up unless the glass has been removed.
• No construction and demolition waste, bricks, broken concrete, dirt, rocks, or railroad ties.
• No business waste, more than a normal home would have, or tires.
• No paint, oil, solvents, pesticides, batteries, gasoline, or other hazardous chemicals.
• Christmas trees can go out with bulky waste. Trees over 5 feet must be cut into sections 5 feet or shorter.
