What the $100 minimum covers

The $100 minimum is the starting price for one item Jeremy can walk out and load without extra steps. A couch from the front room. A treadmill from a main-floor bedroom. The minimum covers the drive out, the carry, the loading and the run to the landfill or the donation dock afterward. Three add-ons apply to single items. A mattress or box spring is $40 each on top of the minimum. A fridge or freezer is $25 each. Stairs are $25, whether that's a basement flight or a walk-up apartment. A mattress on the main floor is the $100 minimum plus $40, so $140. A fridge coming up from the basement is $100 plus $25 for the fridge and $25 for the stairs, so $150. What one-item calls usually look like

Most single-item calls are about the piece that's too heavy or too bulky for one person and a sedan. The usual single items are couches and sectionals, mattresses and box springs, fridges and chest freezers, treadmills and ellipticals, and the odd dresser, recliner, washer or dryer. Treadmills are the awkward one because they're heavy and bolted together in a way nobody wants to undo. Old TVs come up too, and those ride with the load.

A single item still needs a photo. A sleeper sofa weighs about twice what a loveseat does, and a French-door fridge is a different carry than a dorm fridge. Snap the photo from the side so Jeremy can see the size and what's around it, including the doorway it has to go through. If the piece is out in a shed or the garage, a second photo of the path to the driveway helps too.

How the pickup goes

Jeremy books a one-hour arrival window, any day of the week. He pulls up with his pickup and trailer, which fit down a narrow driveway or the alley behind a Sugar House fourplex where a box truck wouldn't. He'll bring the item up from the basement or down from the second floor. Stairs are the one thing to mention up front, since they're the $25 add-on and they change how he carries.

For apartments and condos, say if the manager needs a heads-up or the HOA wants the trailer parked in a certain spot. He's used to both. Tell him which door the piece is coming out of, too. A garage is an easier exit than a narrow front hall, and a piece already sitting in the garage or at the curb is the quickest version of all, which keeps the price down. If it's still in the basement, he'll come get it. Once he's inside, a single item is usually on the trailer in a few minutes. Licensed & insured.

Where one item ends up

A single item gets the same sorting as a full trailer. If the couch is clean and the recliner still works, Jeremy tries a donation center first. A fridge or a treadmill frame is mostly metal, so it gets recycled instead of buried. Cardboard is recycled too. What's left, like the stained mattress or the couch the dog got to, goes to the landfill. TVs and electronics ride with the load.

If you've got a truck, you can drive it to the Sandy transfer station yourself, and that's a fair way to skip the $100. Check their hours first. Most people who text Jeremy don't have the truck, or don't want to wrestle a mattress into one.

What Jeremy won't take as a single item

A few one-item requests get a no. Hot tubs are the big one, whole or cut up. Anything that needs a shovel is out too, so rock, gravel, bricks and dirt stay put. A few chunks of broken concrete from a fence post can sometimes ride along, but never a whole patio. Paint, chemicals and anything else that counts as hazardous waste stay home.
