Mattress removal and disposal in Salt Lake City

A mattress is the classic can't-get-rid-of-it item. It won't fit in the car, the garbage truck won't take it, and the landfill wants it dropped off in person. Jeremy picks up mattresses, box springs, and bed frames from any room in the house across the Salt Lake Valley.

Mattresses and box springs carry a $40 upcharge each on top of the normal load. Jeremy includes that in the number he texts back.

Why mattresses are a hassle everywhere else

Every disposal route in the valley treats a mattress as a special case. Salt Lake City's Call 2 Haul will take one, but it should be clean and dry and set out separately from the rest of the pile, on one of your scheduled pickups. West Jordan's residential dumpster reservations don't allow mattresses or box springs at all. Draper's city dumpsters cap you at three.

Donation is rarely an out for a used mattress either. So the answer is almost always: haul it.

How the pickup works

Text a photo. Say the size, whether there's a box spring and frame, and which floor it's on. Jeremy texts back one price with the upcharge already in it. On the day, he carries the mattress and box spring from the bedroom, down the stairs, and out to the truck. No wrapping and no waiting for a city schedule.

Frames, headboards, bunk beds, and futons go on the same trip, along with the rest of the bedroom furniture and the old bedding, bagged. If you're replacing a whole bedroom set, send a photo of all of it and get one number.

Where it goes

Mattresses and box springs go to the public landfill. Metal bed frames get pulled for recycling. Salt Lake City's Call 2 Haul sends the clean mattresses it collects to a mattress recycler, which is a good sign for the material in general, but for the average ten-year-old mattress the landfill is the honest destination.

The cheaper version

The mattress fee is fixed, but the rest of the load isn't. Take the frame apart if you can. Bag the old pillows and bedding so they're one item instead of ten. Put everything by the door or in the garage. And add the other stuff you've been meaning to get rid of: the truck is already coming, so a dresser or a rolled-up rug rides along for less than a separate trip would cost.

What usually goes with the mattress

The usual call is a queen mattress and the box spring under it. The frame it sat on goes with it, metal or wooden slats. A platform bed has no box spring and comes out as the mattress and the frame. The headboard from the set is part of the load. One bolted to the wall changes the carry, so it belongs in the photo.

A dresser and nightstands going with it are furniture removal. One mattress with nothing else is single-item pickup.

How Jeremy loads it

Jeremy parks the pickup and trailer as close to the door as the driveway lets him. A mattress goes through a doorway on its edge and bends around a stair turn. A box spring doesn't bend, so on a tight staircase the box spring is the slow piece. A mattress sealed in a plastic bag from the move can stay that way and come out cleaner.

What sets the time is the walk, not the weight. From a main-floor bedroom it's a few steps to the door. From the far end of an upstairs hall, with a turn at the top of the stairs, it takes longer.

Put the exit door in the text, since a garage door beats a tight front hall, and a mattress already leaning in the garage or at the curb beats both, because less carrying keeps the price down. It doesn't have to be moved first, though. He'll come up and get it. Anything between the bedroom and the trailer, like a gate code, goes in the same text.

How the home changes the job

A bedroom on the second floor or in the basement adds a flight of stairs. Townhome hallways are narrow and the guest spots are tight. The bed comes down from an upstairs bedroom to wherever the trailer can sit. If the HOA has a say in where the trailer parks, that goes with the photo. So does a building manager who needs to know.

In an apartment with an elevator the mattress rides down and the walk is short.

A long driveway helps when the trailer fits up it. The bed only has to reach the garage, not the street. A side gate to the backyard matters when the bedroom is a basement walk-out. The shortest path is through the yard, and the gate has to be wide enough for the box spring.
