The city bulk truck comes on its own calendar, and curbside bulk item pickup in Salt Lake City is for the couch that can't wait on it. Jeremy Saxey runs Salt City Junk Haulers out of Midvale with his pickup and trailer, and the curb pile is part of the job. A homeowner set the old sofa out, the city passed on it, and now it's sitting by the garage. A landlord has a dead fridge on the back patio and a tenant moving in Friday. Jeremy comes and takes it, usually within a few days.

Most cities in the valley run some kind of bulk-waste pickup, with a schedule and a wait. Jeremy doesn't work on a calendar like that. He takes the couch, the fridge and the mattress whether they're on the city's list or not, and it doesn't have to be at the curb. He covers the whole Salt Lake Valley, from Salt Lake City out to West Valley City and down to Draper.

This page is for a couch or a fridge already at the curb. One piece carried out from inside the house is single item pickup, and a whole room of pieces is furniture removal.

What's usually in the pile

The couch that sat out through one rainstorm too many. The mattress and box spring from the guest room. The fridge that quit in July and got wheeled onto the back patio. A roll of carpet and pad from a bedroom redo, still stacked in the garage. A recliner or a dresser from a kid's room. On some jobs it's the swamp cooler that came off the roof and never left the driveway. Sometimes it's the whole pile the city truck drove past. Jeremy hauls furniture and appliances, so a mixed pile at the curb is nothing unusual.

Your city's bulk-pickup page has the next date and what its truck takes. The call to Jeremy comes when something goes sideways. The next pickup date is too far out and the couch is on the park strip now. The item isn't on the list. The HOA sends a letter about the mattress leaning on the fence. Or the truck took half and left the rest. He takes the couch or the fridge whether the city would have or not.

How the pickup goes

Jeremy shows up inside a one-hour window with the pickup and the trailer. When it's already at the curb, the load takes a few minutes and the number comes down. If the couch is still in the living room, he carries it out. If the fridge is in the basement, he brings it up, and stairs add $25. On the older Salt Lake City blocks with alleys, he'll back the trailer down the alley if it's clear so the couch never crosses the front lawn. In the Sandy and Draper subdivisions where an HOA will write you up for a mattress on the strip, he can take it straight from the garage so nothing ever sits outside. At an apartment or condo, put the loading area and the elevator in the text with the photo. He loads it and goes.

How Jeremy prices a curb pile

The price comes from the photo, so send a picture of everything that's going, and send a second one if two more things land on the curb after the first. A photo of it where it sits, inside or out, works the same. He takes cash, card or Venmo once the trailer's loaded. Where the couch and the fridge end up

Donation comes first. A couch or a dresser in decent shape goes to a donation center instead of the dump. Fridges, freezers, washers and water heaters get recycled with the rest of the metal, and cardboard gets recycled too. A stained mattress or a roll of carpet and pad goes to the landfill. If there's a TV or a stereo in the pile, it rides with the load. Jeremy sorts at the trailer so the landfill only gets what nothing else will take.

What Jeremy won't take on a curb pickup

The list is short. Hot tubs stay. So does anything that needs a shovel: rock, gravel, bricks and dirt. Paint, chemicals and anything hazardous stay too, and Salt Lake County's household hazardous waste program is the place for those. Broken concrete is a maybe. A few chunks from a busted step can ride along sometimes, but a whole patio is a no. Most everything else that ends up on a curb in the valley goes, including the stuff the city truck left behind. If it's borderline, send the photo anyway and Jeremy will say yes or no before the day gets booked.
